Welcome to the English Department at Mercy Vocational High School. Our department has a curriculum that focuses on developing the following skills:

Writing and Thinking
Listening and Speaking
Reading and Vocabulary

The development of these skills is the basis of everything we do. The English Department believes that proper communication skills are critical to a successful and full life after Mercy. Regardless of vocational choice, good communication skills are critical to success in the workplace.

We understand that no single teaching method works for all students, so we use a variety of approaches and resources to ensure the individual student’s success. We recognize the different learning styles of our students, and in conjunction with vocational classes, we are well equipped to develop their multiple intelligences to their potential.

Our curriculum is developed from many sources, including the Philadelphia Archdiocesan secondary education curriculum, standards adopted by the National Council of Teachers of English, and experienced faculty. Each year focuses on a different aspect of literature:

• Freshman study the Genres of Literature: the novel, the short story, poetry, and plays.
• Sophomore year focus is on World Literature.
• Junior year is American Literature.
• Senior year means British Literature.

At each ability level, effort is made to connect literature and writing with the students’ own lives as well as with their various shops. Original and adapted of texts are incorporated throughout the four years so that all students may share their literature experiences.
