All Grade 9 students participate in computer-fluency training throughout the first year at MVHS. Students become acquainted with the Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Power Point, and Excel. Microsoft Office is used throughout our school, and technology training stretches beyond the Grade 9 program.

The training takes the students through the IC3 Certification Process. This process involves three parts: Computing Fundamentals, Key Applications, and Living Online. Students learn initial skills in computer-fluency computer class and then have time to practice these skills in computer-assisted class. As computer competency improves, individual students take the certification tests for IC3.

With this solid Microsoft background, students are expected to stay proficient with their computer skills. Throughout the grades assignments call for Word techniques, Power Point presentations, and Excel spreadsheets. Technology is integrated with all subjects, academic as well as vocational. Expectations for these assignments are clearly defined and coordinated by the faculty to ensure the practice of computer skills. Students also maintain a resume of their skills and accomplishments throughout their Mercy careers. Electronic portfolios capture their accomplishments and assignments.

Exposure to new technology abounds outside of our three tech labs. SmartBoards and projection equipment are being utilized in an ever-increasing way in our classrooms. On-going teacher training translates immediately into improvements in classroom instruction.
