CSC EVENTS
OPERATION CLEAN SWEEP
Help to make our neighborhood clean and pleasant by painting over graffiti,
sweeping up trash, and maintaining the park at 29th and Hunting Park.
Tuesdays in the Fall and Spring
ST. COLUMBA¹S SHELTER
Culinary-Arts students plan and prepare a meal for the forty formerly homeless
residents of St. Columba¹s. Three to four CSC members take the food to St.
Columba¹s and serve it to the men, taking some ³down time² to visit with
some of the residents as well. Alternate Tuesdays
CALCUTTA HOUSE
CSC students cook a meal at Calcutta House, a hospice for people with AIDS.
There, residents are eager to share their experiences and engage students in
discussion on a range of topics while dinner is cooking. Alternate Thursdays
SACRED HEART HOME
Students visit Sacred Heart residents who suffer from incurable cancer.
They talk and play games with residents who enjoy their young visitors and
have a valuable perspective on life to share with young people.
Alternate Thursdays
PROJECT MERCY AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM
CSC members help first to third graders with homework; plan to include computer help. Alternate Tuesdays
SCHUYLKILL VALLEY NATURE CENTER
CSC members volunteer to clear brush and weeds from the acreage and to
plant trees at the center. If you like the outdoors, then this is a
project for you. Various Saturdays
COVENANT HOUSE
CSC members volunteer to make sandwiches for Covenant House¹s outreach
program to kids on the streets of Philadelphia. Thursdays
ANNUAL EVENTS
AIDS WALK
Participants sign up friends and family as sponsors to raise money for a
variety of organizations serving people with AIDS. They then join the
team from Calcutta House in walking eight miles along the Schuylkill River
to fulfill their pledges.
FOOD AND CLOTHING DRIVES
CSC coordinates collections for Thanksgiving dinners for needy neighborhood
families and clothing for homeless individuals.
OPERATION SANTA CLAUS
CSC members supervise the collection of money and new toys, shop for more
toys, wrap the presents, and then spend a few hours on Christmas Eve
personally delivering them to the children. December 24
WINTERFEST
Approximately seventy-five young people, all physically or mentally
challenged, converge upon MVHS for a day-long festival of games, prizes,
live entertainment, food, and companionship. Each visitor is accompanied
by a ³buddy,² a student from Mercy or another collaborating school. February
BREADBASKETBALL
Homerooms compete in the collection of non-perishable food that is used
to stock the food banks. CSC members help by collecting, sorting, delivering
the food, and compiling weekly tallies. March
PENNY DRIVE
A collection of pennies finances CSC school projects. The collection takes
place from Mercy Day, September 24, and ends on Halloween. Homerooms and the
four classes compete. Great fun! Many pennies!
