Mr.Hove is working in Mercy East to move the woodworking shop to that building. Mr. Smiley is meeting with potential employers and organizing the year ahead. Mrs. Heisler and Mrs. Iffrig are helping with the important tasks of the summer. Mr. Huang along with his helper, Will Burley, installed new computers in the Business Lab and is revving up PowerSchool for a new school year. Mr. Corcoran is hanging new SmartBoards and Mr. Maphorisa is busy with tech duties. Mr. Ross is keep us connected electrically. Mr. Hillman is gearing up for new sports/ seasons. Mrs. Leighbody and Miss Strittmatter continue to connect benefactors to our unique program. Sister Jean, Mr. McEndy and Mrs. Schepise manage the many financial considerations of our school. Sister Barbara, Sister Stella and Mrs. Mangano are helping with the files and other jobs as needed.
Sister Rosemary, Sister Patricia and I are working on the details for the upcoming school year. We are proud to work with our great faculty and staff to provide excellent academic and vocational education in a caring and compassionate atmosphere. We welcome our students and their families as the new school year approaches.
The summer began with a few freshmen finishing their service hours with Sister Stella and some sophomores working with Sister Mimi. We are happy to report that all of our freshmen and sophomores have fulfilled their service hours. Miss Campellone and Miss Ski are putting the finishing touches on the yearbook for the 2007-2008 school year, highlighting our recent graduates. The book will be back for a get-together for those graduates in late September.
For the last week in June and the first two weeks in July, forty new freshmen are taking summer courses in reading, math and life skills. Miss Ski organized the program and Mrs. Binder, Miss Lopata and Sister Stella are the teachers. These students are getting to know one another and the building. At the end of July, Mr. Wilkins and Miss Lopata ran the “Survive and Thrive” program for some of our upperclassmen.
In addition to our summer school, Mercy Neighborhood Ministries is running a summer program and using our auditorium. We, at Mercy, are happy to see these smiling faces and hope that these children consider Mercy as their high school some day.
As the summer moves on, I hope that our students and their families remain safe and have fun summer times together. I am available if any questions should come to mind. Feel free to be in touch with me.
My prayers are with you. Blessings and peace.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
As summer approaches and another school year comes to an end, I want to express my gratitude to you in the name of all the faculty and staff of Mercy Vocational High School. Thank you for your cooperation and assistance during this school year. I hope that we have served you and your children well. I imagine that you have seen many accomplishments and much growth from those early September days.
To the parents of the Class of 2008, I wish you and your “graduates” much peace and happiness in the days and years ahead. We will be staying in touch with your sons and daughters to check on their progress in jobs, trade schools or colleges. If there is anything we can do for you in the future, know that we are here for you. Stay in touch. See you at graduation and thank you for your efforts which can make a glorious day like that possible. Congratulations to you!
To the rest of the parents and guardians, I extend my congratulations to you as well. Thank you for moving through the year with your sons and daughters. May the summer be a time of rest and relaxation for you and your families. In September, I will see you at back-to-school nights and welcome you to another leg of this four-year journey. In the meantime, enjoy the days of summer. Encourage your sons and daughters to read the summer book, to do SkillsTutor on the computer, to work on shop projects (mostly for new sophomores), and to do creative and meaningful activities. May this summer time be a chance for learning of a different variety for your sons and daughters.
I hope by now that you have logged on to PowerSchool and have begun to use this valuable tool and means of communication. The teachers and staff are hoping that this form of communication will answer your questions and keep you posted in a more effective way. We will be taking a poll in September to be sure that all families can access this tool.
Please read Sister Patricia’s newsletter for some pertinent end-of-the-year and summer information. June’s calendar is worth checking so that you are sure of the days in for certain grades and the important dismissal times. I want you to be sure of the comings and goings for your peace of mind and your children’s safety. June is a busy time of finishing classes, returning books, and all those ending things. Remind your sons and daughters to see all things through to the end, i.e. doing homework, studying for tests, finishing requirements, maintaining good conduct, coming on time, and being at school every day.
If you need to be in touch with us, some of us are here during the summer months Monday through Thursday. Sister Patricia and I are just a phone call or email away. We will cover for each other during vacation and retreat. We will get back to you in a timely fashion.
On behalf of Sister Rosemary, Sister Patricia and myself, I send you our prayers for a wonderful and peaceful summer for you and yours. We are grateful for the gift you are to Mercy Vocational High School and for the trust you have in us, our faculty and staff.
Peace and blessings.
Sister Susan
