Business Education Program
Hands-on experience with computer applications is essential in a vocational high school environment given the increasing use of computers in today's workplace. Many high schools offer their students computer experience, but at Mercy we have a unique opportunity to offer an integrated, hands-on and career-oriented computer curriculum that offers our students marketable skills especially for businesses in the five county area. It is important that our business education students become comfortable with a variety of spreadsheet and database programs as well as with word processing.

Students in the Business Program follow the curriculum listed in the table. Each student leans about the business world, how businesses work, the difference between a product and a service. Each student writes a simple business plan as part of the Business Theory Program.
The Microsoft Office Suite is taught with the goal of having each business student earn Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) Certification in the MS Office packages. Mercy Vocational High School became an MOS Authorized Testing Center two years ago. Since then over 60 certifications have been earned through the Mercy program.
The Accounting course is designed to provide students with an exposure to, and an understanding of the basic skills of accounting. This course introduces terminology and concepts that will enable students to have a better understanding of the economic and financial activities of the business world, and provide an introduction to computerized accounting applications. Additionally, this course provides a practical background for future study in Accounting and Business Management.
Students participate in a professional experience during their senior year. The experience is typically a Co-Op job with a local business. Mercy Vocational High School students have worked in a variety of professional settings.
Mercy Vocational High School has 44 students enrolled in the Business Education department for the 2007-2008 school year (12 Seniors, 17 Juniors and 15 Sophomores).
