The Carpentry program at Mercy Vocational High School offers a sequential learning experience that provides students with a solid theoretical and technical foundation for pursuing a variety of career options in the building trades. Over the three years of coursework, areas such as hand/power tool use, trade-related machine operation, cabinetmaking, architectural drafting/design, print reading, and residential and commercial construction are incorporated into the curriculum.

The carpentry and woodworking students are well prepared to provide the Philadelphia’s construction trade with skilled workers. Mercy’s carpentry students are being prepared for job placement on construction sites as well as with interior woodworking. Students are prepared for above entry-level positions in their chosen field. Mercy Carpenters receive certification through NCCER in Core Curriculum and Level I carpentry. These students are also listed in the National Registry.

During their sophomore year, students begin with carpentry fundamentals: safety and power tool usage. In junior year, more advanced skills include house framing. By senior year, the carpentry and woodworking students are finishing the framing for houses in the carpentry studio at the school. Students in this program gain real world experience throughout their time at Mercy Vocational High School through the execution of projects at the school including a stage for a student event, railing and window installation. Students in this shop also participate in a variety of Habitat for Humanity projects throughout the city.

Mercy Vocational High School has 48 students enrolled in the Carpentry/woodworking shops for the 2007-2008 school year (14 Seniors, 13 Juniors, and 21 Sophomores).
