In 2004, Mercy Vocational High School introduced a new Computer Technician Certification shop. During the first year of the program, thanks to a partnership with Project H.O.M.E, this course was taught at the new Honickman Learning Center and Comcast Technology Labs, but was moved back to the Mercy campus starting in the fall semester of 2005. The computer technician shop will span a period of three years, beginning in the student’s sophomore year. During the first year, students learn about the basic hardware layout of a computer, how to identify and install various components, and how to deal with difficulties that may arise. The second year focuses on the software and operating systems. Students learn about the Microsoft Windows operating system, from installation to user customization and proper system maintenance. The program culminates in a co-op experience during senior year.

The shop is designed to provide a foundation for continuing education or entry-level employment in computer technology. Students are expected to gain valuable skills in computer repair, to learn how to properly install and upgrade hardware and software and to troubleshoot technical problems. The goal of this course is to have the students CompTIA A+ certified by the end of their junior year. The CompTIA A+ exam is a two-part exam, testing knowledge of hardware as well as software and operating systems. Each student is also encouraged to earn his/her Certiport IC3! Internet and Computing Core Certification. This certification is the standard for the industry’s entry-level technicians. In the senior year, upon successful completion exam, students may begin working in a co-operative employment position in a local business. These students will graduate with the skills to be effective and efficient computer service and repair technicians

Mercy Vocational High School has 14 students enrolled in the Computer Technician shop for the 2007-2008 school year (3 Seniors, 5 Juniors, and 6 Sophomores).
