The Cosmetology curriculum provides both classroom theory and hands on practical training that is relative to the beauty industry. It is a three year state board regulated program in which the students are required to obtain 1,250 hours that will allow them to obtain certification and practice with a operator’s license. The students are well prepared to enter into the beauty world by training in hair care techniques, nail care and skin care.

The first year students are introduced to various scientific studies that will enable them to study anatomy, sanitation practices, hairstyling, and manicuring and facial procedures.

The second year students are introduced to chemical applications in Haircoloring, and Relaxers. An intense approach is taken into consideration for the study of Trichology (The Study of Hair) and Histology of the Skin where the students will tell the differences of diseases and disorders. They are also introduced to the Bones, Muscles, and Body Systems. There is more practice on live clients, and the students engage in competitions.

Mercy Vocational High School’s cosmetology program is designed to qualify students for careers as a professional Hairstylist, and introduce them for opportunities as an educator and salon manager or owner. Field trips to hair shows, and The Philadelphia Beauty Showcase Museum provide the students will expert knowledge of their craft. Experts of the Field have been invited to give the students live demonstrations and offer advice about the industry.

All Mercy cosmetology students successfully earn their state board required hours and are required to register to take the state board exam before they graduate. Upon passing the exam, students will receive the Pennsylvania State Cosmetology License that will allow them a promising future in providing services in nail care, hair care, and skincare.

The 2007-2008 school year has 38 students enrolled in Cosmetology (11 Seniors, 10 Juniors, and 17 Sophomores).
