March Newsletter

We are over the hump. The school year will be over before you know it. Please encourage your son or daughter to continue to do his or her best until the school year ends. Let’s end on a positive note. Let’s keep financial aid!

Research shows that eating together and talking to one another has many benefits. One benefit, the student does better in school. I have some dinner conversation topics for you and your child:

 The freshmen are making decisions about what shop they want to pursue. They’ve been visiting their first choice shop to gain some first-hand knowledge about the shop. Parents please discuss shop choices with your son or daughter.

 Meanwhile our seniors are making decisions for life after Mercy. Hopefully your son or daughter has plans or is making plans for post Mercy. Again, talk to your son or daughter about his or her plans.

 Another discussion topic for all families … ask your child about our recent guest presenter – Dr. Michael (Mickey) Fowlin. Ask your child to tell you what zebras and oysters have to do with diversity.

Some reminders …
 Third quarter ends March 30th – it will be here before you know it.
 If your son or daughter has a new need to take medicine during school hours, please be sure that you call Mrs. Iffrig (ext 112) to explain the details.
 Leave voicemail or email message for the teacher with whom you wish to speak. Stay in contact with the teacher and assist in the correction of an issue. Contact me at extension 141 or cglatts@mercyvhs.org if you do not get through to the teacher.
 Please make sure your contact information is correct in PowerSchool. Please check your address, phone number, and email information in PowerSchool and update the information if it is incorrect.

Check the calendar on the webpage for any calendar additions.
The web calendar remains the most current.

Thank you for your support and cooperation.

Biography:
“no shouldas, couldas, wouldas!”

Many of my business students probably received this comment on their business plan drafts. And it crossed my mind when I discerned whether or not to apply to for the Vice Principal position at MVHS.

So, who is Miss Glatts? I bring a variety of experiences to my job as Vice Principal – high school teacher, college professor, software analyst, systems engineer, and program manager.

Education: I studied secondary education at West Chester State College. My concentration was mathematics. I am a numbers person. One of my Vice Presidents at Lockheed Martin Corporation, LMC, used to say “numbers always win!” I believe that, too. Many times I will use numbers to make a point. I earned my Master of Science, MS, in Computer Science at Villanova University.

Teaching Experience: I had trouble finding my first teaching job. I wanted to teach math in a high school but I looked very young. I did eventually get a job teaching math at the Overbrook School for the Blind – my youthful looks did not matter there! This was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned a lot in one year. I left there to teach where I always wanted to teach – Archmere Academy. I taught high school math and computer programming at this college prep school in Delaware for seven years before taking a job in corporate America. Now I am back to teaching. This is my tenth year at Mercy Vocational High School. I spent the last nine years teaching the business shop. I truly enjoyed teaching the business students. I had high expectations for the students and they met those expectations. I had lots of fun in this shop too. I hope to continue to help there when needed.

Business Experience: I went to corporate America in order to become a better teacher. I wanted to be able to bring business experience to my students. GE hired me for what I intended to be a five year stint. In the end I worked as a full-time employee at GE/Martin Marietta/Lockheed Martin Corporation for fifteen years. There, through training and experience, I learned to be a program manager. I successfully led our 1500-person organization to be the first company to earn a Systems Engineering Capability Maturity Module, SE-CMM, rating. Another success was being program manager for development of a web-based tool (IPE) which is still used today. I began working this program when the idea was just a concept. The program grew from two of us working it to 45 employees when I left the program. Today this program team is even bigger with thousands of users. I still get introduced as the mother of IPE. When I left LMC to return to teaching LMC kept me as a part-time worker during the summer.

This year I am looking forward to teaching technology to our freshmen, as well as performing my duties as VP. I will continue to focus on technology, making sure that Mercy continues to be the most tech-abled school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. When I am not working I enjoy spending time with my family, sewing, staying healthy, and reading. I also like to travel to different countries and learn about different cultures.

I have high expectations for myself in my new role. I am looking forward to this role and hopefully having more impact in moving MVHS from “Mercy good to Mercy great!”
